I visited friends in Birmingham, taking maple syrup and leaving room for pecans on the return trip. We drove down to Heaton's (right on I-65 - couldn't be easier to find) and were greeted as we came through the door by a lovely little lady who introduced herself as Mrs. (she said her first name, but I forget) Heaton. Welcomed us, asked where we were from, and said she hoped we'd stay for lunch - proceeding to tell us the soup of the day (homemade, of course)! I told her I'd come to take pecans home and she apologized for the price, as the crop had not been good this year. We toured the store (more gifts upstairs), and settled in for a bowl of chicken corn chowder accompanied by two pieces of pecan cornbread. Delicious! I found some dish towels for Christmas gifts, indulged in 1/2 pound of cinnamon sugar coated pecans (yummmm), and figured I could stuff 10 pounds of pecans in my suitcase! We did not try the ice cream (I was drooling for some, but had seen another sign on our way down, so decided we'd let the soup settle. Murphy's Law - didn't see the sign on the way back! :-( Next time, we'll sample one of Heaton's pecan-infested flavors!!Oh - and they also grow peaches! At a different time of year.

We pulled off to visit the Heaton Pecan Farm on a whim as we were travelling to Montgomery. Wow, what a great idea to stop in for a visit! The staff were welcoming and offered samples of various pecan products. Mrs. Heaton (the owner) came out and asked where we were from and personally gave us samples of her favourite pecan treats. By the time we had finished the samples, we were stuffed! Everything was so delicious. They also serve lunch though we didn't stay long enough to try their food. They have several different kinds of ice cream as well and everything is made on site so it is very fresh. We had such a good time visiting the gift shop, trying samples and chatting with Mrs. Heaton. Definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Driving on I 65 between Nashville, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, one MUST stop for a while at this nice estabishment. It's not really Aunt Bea: it's John & BILLIE Heaton who head this very fine place. They have some of the best pies and ice cream EVER. Plus some other food. They are extremely friendly. They do have a WEBsite which I have forgotten that address(after all I am a blond!! DAH!!). The atmosphere is pleasant clean small town. When one is a long way from home, it's great to find a place like this. Again true Southern Hospitality.
