I never did the ground trip into the valley, but I did fly over it in a float plane a bunch of times. It is amazing! one of the coolest places on earth.

For our 30th wedding anniversary we spent a month traveling all over Alaska. This park was definitely a highlight. It was rather expensive, but SO worth it. We took a plane from Anchorage to King Salmon and then a small float plane from King Salmon to Katmai. (Worst thing for me was the embarrassment of having to weigh me and my luggage to make sure the plane wasn't over weight.) They sat you in specific spots on the plane according to your weight to balance the flight. It was an amazing flight. We flew over picturesque scenery with lots of tiny "mini lakes" to get to Katmai. We camped there for 4 days. One day we took the bus to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and saw the remnants of the devastation done by the volcano. Very worthwhile!

Nice hike down the valley, ranger explains about vulcanic activities and the history of the area. Interesting. Im a bit spoilt growing up in the Swiss alps. Walk up hill again might be a bit tough for elderly people.

We took the day trip from Brooks Lodge but the scenic views were hampered by poor visibility due to low cloud. The low cloud also restricted the views of the volcano, but we saw enough to wonder at the magnitude of the eruption which filled the whole valley. Eruptions in recent history, such as Mount St Helens were miniscule in comparison. The walk down to the canyon was worth every step. The landscape made by the volcanic activity and the erosion of the river is spectacular. If you have the chance, by staying long enough, wait for a good weather day to make the trip-if they occur !!!!

We did a flight over the cauldron. Anyone intrested in geology would find this spectacular. The weather could have been better providing a bigger view, but it was fantastic.

Great add-on to your bear viewing trip to Brooks Lodge. See what made this a National Park to begin with. It's a whole day drip - bus drive - hike - return drive. The bus ride has some terrific scenery, but the Valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes is really special. Be sure to take the hike to the bottom of the canyon, but beware, you hike back up that same trail. Uphill all the way.

From the camp we boarded a bus and drove along a scenic dirt road. The scenery was lovely and on two occasions we had to drive through a river bouncing around over the rocks. A stop at a viewing point afforded us great views of the surrounding mountains and the ranger explained the eruption. Arriving at the valley we had lunch and then walked down to the valley. It is a long way down and therefore a long way up but worth every step. The scenery in particular of the pumice and ash cliffs is unbelievable.

Wife and I decided to break up our time at brooks by heading out to the valley of 10,000 smokes. Was a nice day, ranger was very knowledgeable. I found it to be very interesting. Enjoyed the hike down to the valley floor. If you are not if decent shape or have bad knees you might want to pass on the hike as it is all down hill on the way down but all up hill the way back. I am not in great shape and had no issues but knees where sore that night.

A nice way to spend a day at Brooks. Beautiful scenery, relaxing drive, yummy lunch (I believe you have the option to bring your own.... but we opted for the one you could pay for).I highly recommend the hike to the falls. It's 1.5 miles each way with an 800-900' elevation change and it's downhill on the way to the falls. I'm overweight and not athletic but I did the hike in 2.5 hrs and was glad I went all the way to the falls. They are beautiful and it gets you close to the orangey-yellow ash/pumice that makes up the valley.

During our stay at Brooks Camp, we took the bus to Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. It was a relaxing trip with lots of stops for photo ops. We were provided sandwiches and then had the option to go for a group hike or individual. We opted to race down the valley on our own and were met on numerous occasions by others from our bus who were doing the same. Our guide was keeping pace. It was a fun day and we got lucky that it didn't rain.

This is a good morning trip and a beautiful ride into the heat of the park. If you like a great hike, you got it with this gig. Ride upfront in the bus.

The Valley of 10,000 smokes is located at the Katmai National Park and Preserve in King Salmon, Alaska. This area has been preserved because of its uniqueness. It was the places for the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The only way to access this area is by coordinating a trip with Katmai Air and Brooks Lodge. You will have a NPS Park Ranger with you but the transportation must be arranged with them, that is the only way to get there since it is 23 miles away from Brooks Camp. It is not recommended at all for people with disabilities due facilities limitations, unless you want to just to do the trip for the view at the cabin. The trip has 3 stops with a 10 mins talk on each stop by the Park Ranger. The total travel time to the Valley is about 2.5 hours each way. At the arrival to the Three Forks Cabin you will have 30 mins for lunch. Then the Ranger will lead the hike to the Yukah falls which is about 1.5 miles downhill. Keep in mind you might get wet or get very hot depending on the weather conditions. The weather at the Valley is extreme. Once the hike starts there are not bathrooms, so keep that in mind!Bring a camel pack, a big bottle of water fruits or trail mix! People interesting in staying for a couple of days must have backpacking experience. Novarupta the eruption site is about 20 miles from the Cabin. Fill out the travel plan at the Brooks Camp!On the way back you will feel very tired, but the hike and the views are amazing. Once in a lifetime experience. The trip starts 7am, and group will be back around 4:00pm!Conclusion: Highly recommended!!!

When planning our trip to Katmai last year our tour planner asked whether we wanted to add the visit to "The Valley of 10,000 Smokes" There wasn't much literature about the attraction however the information we found did make it sound interesting. You get on vans by the lower bridge at Brook's Lodge and travel about 30-45 minutes stopping occasionally to look at great scenery and wildlife. The actual visit to the overlook of Novarupta is amazing. The landscape looks like you are visiting another planet. Very barren and covered with ash. There is a hike to the falls included that is not a great distance but it is strenuous because of the change in elevation. It is worth the walk but give yourself plenty of time for the walk back up to the top. This is a side tour that I would highly recommend.
