Booked a back country transport with Captain Eric of Breakaway Adventures from Wrangell to Telegraph Creek. We were a group of 12 with 6 canoes, about 30 - 60 liter barrels and lots of paddles, life jackets etc . He met us on our day of arrival in Wrangell after we had paddled for 12 days on the Stikine River. We were able to leave with him our canoes and gear as we were booked into hotel and bed and breakfast accommodations for the night. It was our chance to wash up. Eric was there at 7:00 the next morning ready to take us back to Telegraph Creek. His casual nature will make you feel like you are having just another day adventure out with your friends. He has lots of knowledge and expertise in the area and business for over 25 years. If you need back country transport to make you trip work be sure to check with Eric at Breakaway Adventures as he probably can arrange something. In case you are interested, it took us 5 1/2 hours to travel the 250 kilometers. It was great to watch the GPS to see our speed and the depth of the water.

Breakaway added a boat trip to Le Conte Glacier just for my family on our last day in Wrangell, and it proved to be incredible. Spencer, who has been piloting boats since he was 14, but just got his Captain's license earlier this summer, took us out--my husband, grandson (12) and me. We had the bay to ourselves--along with hundreds of seals on the ice floes! We were about a mile from the actual glacier but it seemed way closer. We saw calving and plenty of icebergs, that other-worldly turquoise color of glacial ice. The silence, broken by the sound of ice moving and bird cries, was beautiful. Spencer took us around icebergs for photos, and we sat in the bay for at least an hour, breathing in the cold and relishing the aloneness and quiet.

Zac drove our boat to Anan Bear Observatory. He brought us water, let us know we were about 30 minutes out and should eat something. He was informed about the bear's behavior, polite with the other tour guides and knew the US Forest personnel. Zac answered our questions and shared lots of fun facts about the area. He made the 1.5 hr boat ride fly by. Don't forget to ask for Zac as your guide.

My friend and I had the chance to get Eric before we left Wrangell to go once more to An An. We had taken 3 other trips in the previous days there and Eric was recommended. It was the best adventure I've had in the 6 times I've been there. Eric was right on time and he took little time getting there. He let us take our time walking to the observatory and while doing so we had the chance to take photo and video of a mother grizzly and cub along the river, he didn't rush our experience and we could see that he knew just how to react and both my friend and I felt completely comfortable as we made our way.I wouldn't hesitate going with him again when once again I come back to .Wrangell. Ak..This next time I would like to go on other adventures also.

We left Wrangell on time and arrived on POW an hour half later. Good ride and comfortable. Easy going operator who was interesting to listen to about things AK and Wrangell.Trip back from POW was great also. Pick up was on time. 6 people and 100's of pounds of gear, bags, fishing equipment and boxes of fish. Very nice ride. Weather was a HUGE help also, I could have water skied behind the boat-well maybe not but it was smooth as glass.Coordinate in advance.

We have been on all three major tours that Breakaway Adventures and Captain Eric offer. The very friendly and helpful service was the best! Each tour is so unique and different in its own way. Eric made sure that we had the very BEST experiences possible. It was like we were just a bunch of friends going out on the boat for the day. We appreciate Breakaway Adventures! If you want to go on the Anan Bear tour, be sure to book far in advance as permits are limited. Breakaway staff will do their best to accommodate your travel days, but understand that these permits go fast! The 45-60 minute ride there (depending on weather) is spectacular. Offloading on the beach, you will embark on a 30 minute or so hike up to the observation deck. After spending a few hours taking photos of the bear, chatting with other guests, and taking in the amazing scenery, you will have had the adventure of a lifetime! This is such a unique experience due to the variety of activity it takes to get there (boat, hike....). Not only did we see bear, but eagles, seal, other birds, and so many salmon. Loved it! The Stikine River Tour takes you across the Stikine River flats, does some "slough burning" where you will feel the thrill of jet boating, and visits waterfalls, the Shakes Lake and Shakes Glacier (where you will have a blast checking out the icebergs), and the Shakes Hot Springs. It is possible you will even have time to make a run to the U.S./Canada border slash. Be sure to book the longer trip which allows time to soak in the Shakes Hot Tubs, a local favorite! Again, the scenery...SPECTACULAR!The 3rd trip offered visits the LeConte Glacier, the southernmost tidewater glacier. IT IS AMAZING! After weaving through miles of breathtaking icebergs, stopping along the way for great photo opportunities, you will get within a safe distance from the face of the glacier. The calving we experienced was so exciting! We even caught some calving with our camera. You can also do an add on to this trip where we went through the town of Petersburg and had an hour or so to explore around this quaint Norwegian town to shop and grab a bite to eat.We cannot recommend any of these trips over the other. All three are a MUST DO with Breakaway Adventures. The covered, heated boats made it comfortable for a little bit of rain we had. We were free to eat snacks onboard at our leisure. There is a cooler of bottled water available. Windows were plentiful to see out of and there's a nice, big deck space for stepping out to take photos should you choose to. We HIGHLY recommend Breakaway Adventures and look forward to a return trip with family/friends for more great times! Thank you Captain Eric and the entire Breakaway Crew!

We went on the Anan Creek trip on 17 July 2013. We sent the following email to Breakaway immediately after our trip:We thought the observatory was fantastic but we had some feedback on the tour that we wanted to share with you. We felt that we did not get great value for our money, considering the cost of the trip. We have been on a number of guided trips recently and this one unfortunately didn't live up to our expectations. We weren't greeted by our guide first thing, we just followed him to the boat. We didn't get any briefing on how the day would pan out, when we would eat, timings or safety. I'm not sure if there were life jackets on board as we couldn't see them and we weren't told. Upon arriving at Anan we were greeted by the ranger, no additional information was provided by Mike so we just followed him along the trail. We paused to look at an eagle and were told to hurry up, I understand that the group shouldn't be split but he hadn't told us this. At Anan we heard him complaining about his pay and work conditions which we thought was unprofessional. We then headed back to the boat where we found out he was physically unable to get to the boat so I had to scramble down the rocks, jump into the boat, pull it to shore and direct him in using the mooring line as an abseil. This is no problem for me but we did wonder what would have happened if we were 40 years older. Mike handed his gun to another guest to hold and she carried it on board. She didn't seem particularly comfortable with this and it seemed strange for her to be handling the gun in a confined space and this made us uncomfortable. The gun was then passed to me and I stowed it immediately. We were not offered a complimentary drink or given the opportunity to eat our lunch at Anan beach as your website suggests. As we left the beach the engine of the boat started smoking. We understand these kind of things are unavoidable but Mike didn't seem to take control of the situation. We headed back to the dock where he started to look at the engine before he'd properly secured the boat. As we departed he very nearly reversed onto the dock mooring line before we and the ranger alerted him. The boat then seemed to be working but then another boat pulled up alongside and we realised that we were getting off and onto this other boat, but it wasn't made very clear. To sum up, this comedy of errors had no lasting effect but we did start to think what if older/more cautious people had been on the trip. And if any of these points had turned more serious we didn't feel that Mike would have taken control of the situation.

Being raised a Wrangell girl, one would think that you have experienced Wrangell at its fullest, not until you take Breakwat Adventures. Eric help us celebrate my girlfriends birthday with a two day trip up the Stikine River to Telegraph BC. Wow! this was one of my most favorite trips up the Stikine. Fun was had by all. we stopped on sandy beach and made sand angels, used a lid from a rubber maid tote as a sled (we found a patch of snow). I took over 1,000 pictures on trip, awesome scenery. Best part of the trip, Eric put up with 10 loud, laughing women for two days!If you visit my home town, make sure you take a trip with Breakaway Adventures!

We had a party of 5 travelling together by the Marine Highway and Wrangell was our 2nd stop.We had booked a trip to Le Conte glacier with Breakaway Adventures. Eric met us at the dockin the morning and we zipped along the water up to the glacier on water as flat as glass. Once starting up the river we saw many, many, many (lots!!) of icebergs that were turquoise. Eric took the time to let us get up close and touch the icebergs and made the trip so much fun. Once we got up to the glacier and waited for it to possibly calve, we didn't have to wait terribly long before we saw a good calving. It created a pretty good swell and was very exciting, if not a touch scary!Eric is a real character and made this adventure one we won't forget. Don't miss it!!!

We booked with Eric in February to insure that we would be able to visit the Anan Bear Observatory as part of our Alaska Trip. From the first contact with Eric, you could tell that this was going to be done right! Our guides were awesome and made sure that everyone knew the information that would keep everyone safe upon entering bear country. It was a once in a lifetime experience! From the moment we arrived at the observatory until departure three hours later, you did not know where to look next! Mike and Jason had brought groups to Anan many times before and spent the entire time on the viewing platform pointing out bears or sharing past experiences. Our group was smaller than the other groups that were viewing on the day that we were there. Eric and his group were awesome! I highly recommend Breakaway Adventures for the Anan Bear Observatory Trip!

These people are very honest. We wanted to see LeConte glacier, and we did. The tides have to be right to get into the glacier area, and they told us on the front end that we might not make it all the way. Eric got us right up to the face of the glacier through some pretty thick ice. We had the time of our lives, and would use them again. There are no bathrooms on board, so be ware!

We made a booking with Eric about 2 weeks before our cruise departure. Very professional and well organized in making arrangements. It's easy to find his 'office' just off the end of the pier.We had a great trip and enjoyed every minute. If you sit near the front you can hear and talk with him, he's very friendly and open to talk about almost anything. You can really get a feel about the lifestyle of the locals and how they enjoy the river system. Eric made a special effort so we could get to the face of the glacier. Remember to bring your bug repellant. Don't drink too much or you'll enjoy the fine accommodations of the outhouses along the river.

We are so happy we booked with Breakaway Adventures. Obviously they deal with people everyday but they excel at customer service. We booked the Le Conte Glacier by way of Petersburg then Anan Bear Observatory. Different jetboat drivers - both were very professional and experienced guides. Eric does a terrific job of managing his business and employees.

Eric took us out to La Conte Glacier for an unforgettable experience. He is an amazing guide who made our group feel like we were the most special of all groups! The whole La Conte experience was amazing and made Mendenhall Glacier a disappointment when we saw it later. This is a definite "must do".
