One of the best collections of early American history. DHS is a museum, a gift shop and a research library. Hopefully they will put a sign outside to spell that out so that more folks will find this treasure. The oldest wooden chair made in America is on display -just one fun highlight!

Free parking available, the art and craft center is worth a visit although quite expensive. The Creams teas are lovely but again very expensive. Beautiful little village where you can walk or row to flatford through the fields and row on the lake. There are lots of cows too. More of a grown up place rather than for children as its more of a mature area and not many places to entertain younger children.

If you love Dedham Pottery this is THE place to visit. Their collection is amazing. They also have a fascinating collection of early furniture. The visit may be short but worth the trip.

The DHS has a small museum, usually one rotating exhibit, and a library and research facility for serious work on Dedham area history. Good place to stop if one is serious about Dedham area history. Also a place for research. Staff is helpful if you want to browse through old records. Not a place for children, I'd say.

When it was first settled, Dedham included a huge area and the historical society has all the documbentation from the early 1600s on.

We had an afternoon free when we were in Dedham and looked around for a local attraction. Since I love old American pottery, we zeroed in on this little gem of a Museum. It is open only noon - 4 p.m., but you can fully cover it in just over an hour. The collection of mainly Dedham Pottery is housed in a lovely old building, which was built in 1888. The history of this New England village is explained in all sorts of artifacts and historical items. Very nicely set up. You can also obtain a booklet (free) for a self-guided tour of historic Dedham village. We did that too and it was wonderful as you get to see all these magnificent buildings and houses and breathe in history. Everything very clearly (and briefly) described in the 15 page booklet. Parking is a bit of a problem thereabouts as the Norfolk County Courthouse is right there and much of the parking is restricted. There is metered parking, and as they seem to be replacing their meters (a bailiff told us) much of them are broken. When we were there in August, most meters did not work, and we got to park for free. This little treasure of a Museum should be visited if you like Museums or old pottery.
