We spent a magical summer night at the lockhouse last year and felt as if we'd stepped back in time. It was lovely having the park to ourselves after sunset. We biked in the twilight and again as the mist rose over the canal waters the next morning. That night, we lit the lanterns, turned on our flashlights, curled up with books, and enjoyed the sounds we miss in the city. Facility-wise, you are roughing it a bit: There is no indoor plumbing or electricity in the house. There is a portajohn nearby. The stone walls keep it cool inside even on a warm night. Screens keep insects out. There is a grill out back to bbq, but we brought our dinner ready to picnic by the river. Also, the beds are charpoy style, which means that you roll towards the middle. If you are thinking of sharing a single bed with your sweetie, you might want to have enough bedding to move to another charpoy later in the evening. There are plenty of beds (6? 8?) and two rooms upstairs for sleeping.Overall, it can be a nice historic experience for a family with kids who want to know a little bit of what living in a blockhouse feels like, a nice evening for adventurous friends or a romantic getaway for those who value a unique experience over luxury.
