new germany state park

We visited for a day trip in winter to hike some of the many trails. The park is large with many well marked trails of varying difficulty. The trails are all groomed for the cross country skiers who visit but are shared by hikers. There is a ski rental business but it was not manned the quiet Thursday we visited and snow cover was unseasonably light. The heated building was open however for access to the rest rooms. Next time we'll plan to ski and make a day of it - very inviting.

Simple pleasures. Read about its origins! Nice lake, and staying in the rangers cabin was cool. In the winter with good snow, the cross county skiing is fabulous.

We went the week before Memorial Day weekend and there were less than 10 people occupying campsites. It was nice to have the place to ourselves. The kayaking rentals were not available at the time, so we made use of the different trails that the park had to offer. The trails are good for beginners or seasoned hikers. It was great to hear about the park's history from one of the staff members. There are old photos and tools displayed inside of the snack shack. The snack shack is a large hall that has wooden rocking chairs and benched overlooking the manmade lake. We went in the water for a very short time,but it was pretty cold due to the time of year. We had no cell reception until we got into town. We left our phones on airplane mode to avoid any extra charges from our cell company. If you are looking for a place to unwind,then it's hidden here!

Almost hate to give this place a good review for fear of more people going there! Arrived on Friday afternoon and set up--no other campers in the 10 or so site dog friendly loop. Couple more sites taken on Saturday, both left the next day. A large group migrated over from their party at one of the very nice pavilions around dark, filled the campground, went to bed and were gone by 7 a.m. Sunday. No neighbors Sunday or Monday night, we left Tuesday afternoon. It does get cold here at night in late September so be prepared. Leaves starting to change and were very pretty. Lots of relatively short, well marked trails. But you can get some decent sized hikes (5 miles or so) by walking several together--most are linked together in some respect. If you like hiking up hill seems like there's plenty of that. Everything was very well maintained, bath houses were clean and everything worked well. Campsites were well laid out in the dog loop, we'd go back there even without a dog. The lake is very pretty but unfortunately didn't produce any fish for me. Great location, great campsites and trails and beautiful scenery. Only 3 hours from Annapolis to reach cell service free bliss! Will definitely go back.

We have been waiting for the cabin renovations and finally got to stay in one one Labor Day weekend. It is basically one big room with a loft and a separate kitchen. However they just renovated everything inside; kitchen, bathroom floors, ceiling, walls. This is a real cabin in the woods with hardwoods everywhere inside and out, and a nicer kitchen then mine at home sans granite. It is cozy. Fireplace. Grill outside with picnic table. No sofa, we brought camp chairs. Front porch has two trex type Adirondacks. Bring all linens, with blankets,towels and paper products. Full fridge with stove,oven and microwave. You still must love the out doors, but this is luxury if you don't mind not having separate bedrooms. Relax, take a jog, fish hike take your dog. The four of our family enjoyed it. Bring games. No cell service no t.v. Clean. Ahhhh!

They say that visitors frequently call it a “best kept secret” and we would all agree. This is only for people that want to “unplug”. We camped here and had no water, electricity, Wi-Fi or phone service. We laughed because they actually have a phone booth that people still use! They have a small manmade lake (Maryland doesn’t have any natural lakes) where you are permitted to boat without gasoline motors. Everything here was so quiet and peaceful. They have wonderful trails that we hiked on. We hear they are great for cross country skiing and snow shoeing as well. We went up to hear a local jamboree that plays at the park every two weeks. It is pretty much that anyone that show up gets to play. That evening there were 14 musicians/singers. They sang country, blue grass and gospel music. We also took their kayak "class" on Saturday morning. We found everything to be very nice.

When visiting the Grantsville area, we stumbled upon this park. Our kids swam in the lake, it has a sandy beach and is roped off for swimming. The water was refreshing and little fish swim around you as you swim. There is a snack bar/restrooms within walking distance, and you can rent kayaks/canoes/paddleboats. It was amazing!!

Went with my sons and one of their friends on a three night camping trip. Had never camped in Maryland before. We were very surprised to find the camping pad made of gravel. Certainly did not expect that, very rough on the tent floor even with a tarp underneath. Bring extra sleeping mats if you can. We reserved site #39 in the White Oak loop. Glad we did, because even though the sites are shaded, there is little privacy between sites. our site appeared to have the most privacy in the entire loop. Toilets and showers were very clean. Firewood was easily obtainable, for a $5 fee. The lake was great, although the fishing was slow., the boys rented kayaks and had a blast. Very nice Lake House with a snack bar (did not eat there) and ice is available for a donation fee. Trails were good, wellmarked. Very enjoyable trip.

On our way home from Deep Creek, MD we made a stop at New Germany State Park. From what we saw it looks like a really nice place. Wish we would have had time to have a picnic or do some of the trails, perhaps next trip.

A great place to take the kids to cool off on a hot day. A small and safe pond to swim in. We only visit during the summer months, but I understand they also have cross country skiing here during the winter months. They do have bath houses so you can rinse the sand off you and your little ones before you get back in the car. Not a lot of stuff to do, but still a worthy place to spend a day in the sun.

Superb hiking trails (which morph into cross-country ski trails in the winter). Nice lake for wading or kids. Great camping area (not really primitive but not much in the way of facilities). Something like 75% of Garrett County is just like New Germany so the whole county is great for hiking, biking, water sports (not so much at New Germany), camping, and the whole outdoors thing! (There are fees in the Summer for most of the parks.)

Our family reserves the pavillion for our Reunion each year.The pavillion has lights,kitchen, and plenty of space. This year my daughter and dad went on the lake in the paddle boats. Other family members did a little fishing. It's a nice place to be in any weather.

Nice, clean beach with lifeguards. Excellent nature center to entertain the little ones. Wonderful hiking trails that serve as cross country ski trails in the winter.

Great park, with small beach on lakefront. Kids fished and swam. Our family holds their reunion here every two years. Beautiful scenic park.

This was our first time staying at New Germany State Park and it was a terrific little 3 day vacation. We stayed in cabin 10 and it was cozy, very well kept and immaculately clean. The trails were well labeled and there was even a flat wide trail perfect for biking. The park rangers are the kindest...we forgot dish soap and while asking a ranger where we could buy some, he instead showed up at our cabin with a cup full of soap!
